How to Handle Rumors

People at school often face things with rumors and the spreading of untruth. This can cause people to be turned against and can cause them to have to face pain at school.

When people spread rumors, it can cause other things to happen, and it can be intimidating and hard. Some people spread rumors to become more popular but when this happens, it has to be seen as a form of bullying. This can be serious and can cause a lot of hurt and pain against the person that is getting the rumors spread about them.

Rumors are gossip that is not kind and is hurtful. This can cause someone to be intimidated and when they are talked about, it can cause other people to look down on them.

When people do this to others, they are not doing what is right. This can cause that person to lose friends and to have strangers and other people to talk to them or to be not as nice to them.

This kind of bullying can make other children be afraid of talking or saying things because they will be afraid that they will be targeted next.

Even if they don’t care, when you see someone that is being treated poorly or someone that is being bullied, it makes people feel bad. Bullying is something that can hurt children and affect everyone that goes to that school.

You don’t have to be friends with everyone you meet but you need to be kind to them. Even if you don’t like someone, it doesn’t give you the right to go around and gossip about them or spread rumors about them.

Doing this can cause you to become more popular with some people, but with others, it just causes people to be afraid of you.

Popularity

If you want to be popular, the best way to do this is to treat people with kindness and with respect. Learn to treat people with love and compassion. Do not let people have power over you to make you feel that you have to be mean or rude.

Stop being a follower and learn to be a leader. When you are confident in yourself, you can lead your group and you can show behavior that is helpful and loving.

What happens if you find out that you are being bullied or talked about?

Talk to an Adult

If you find that you are being bullied or talked about, find a teacher or a parent to talk to. Tell them what is happening. Let them know what is happening to you and how it is making you feel.

Tell them when things change and let them know that you feel alone and let them support you. A trusted adult will stand up for you and will help to stop the gossip.

Friends

Find people that will be your friend and will stick with you no matter what other people are saying. Share your feelings with that person. Do not listen to what people say about you and learn to have fun and ignore what they spread.

Speak Up Against It

If someone starts a rumor about you, stand up and say that it is not true. Tell the person talking about you that you don’t appreciate being talked about.

Do not yell and do not act angry or mean. Say what you have to say in a calm voice and assure them that you don’t care what they say. Then, walk away. You don’t have to wait for them to respond.

Before you talk to that person, talk to an adult about how you will approach the situation. Each situation is different and if you are worried it will turn into a fight, have your friend or the adult go with you.

Take Care of You

Make sure that you are taking care of yourself and you are building your confidence. Situations can be hard and painful, and you need to make sure that you focus on positive things. Learn to believe in yourself and be strong when situations are hard. This will help you to be stronger in life and to be able to stand up for yourself when you need to.
